Zero council tax increase, again

Wandsworth is planning on keeping council tax at the same rate for the third year running. In one of those bizarre twists of local government finance Wandsworth’s average council tax is dropping because the Putney and Wimbledon Commons Conservators (who levy a precept to maintain the commons) are reducing their precept. The video features Deputy [...]

The end of the Elsley School building?

Elsley School’s move to the Nightingale site looks like being made permanent. The site has been empty for some time now, and on occasion been a cause for concern and problem for neighbouring residents. To be fair I’m not that surprised. I was chairman of governors at the school immediately before it ‘federated’ with Nightingale, [...]

Congratulations to East Putney

The council and police won the Metropolitan Police’s snappily titled Problem Oriented Partnership Award last night for their work talking problems in Strathan Close, Putney. A great example of how effective targeted work can be in solving, rather than just moving a problem, the area has seen reports of anti-social behaviour drop from one per [...]

Stormont Road and indecisive public consultation

The results of the council’s consultation on traffic control in the Stormont Road area (which in reality is most of the roads between Clapham Common and Lavender Hill) were considered by the council’s transport committee last night. They were, frankly, more an exercise in showing how consultation often doesn’t help anyone come to a conclusion! [...]

The new ten point plan for Clapham Junction

Almost five years ago the council launched its ten point plan for Clapham Junction. It was one of those things that was more aspiration than anything. The council had little control over the implementation of most of the ten points, but it did form a great basis for lobbying by creating a coherent vision of [...]

Crime in Wandsworth – Part Three

The third, and final, part of my Face The Public presentation. Again, at 9 minutes it isn’t short, but it is annotated so you can jump right to the bit you want. A few things. First, I need to give a photo credit to diamond geezer for allowing me to use and adapt his photo [...]

Blogged: Tweets for week ending 2010-02-14 http://bit.ly/8YzY0M # Blogged: Crime briefing, 4 – 11 February http://bit.ly/aU65Nu # Maybe I should quit politics. I'm finding the #ivenevervotedtory and #ivenevervotedlabour tags tedious in the extreme. # Just made myself some herbal tea. In years to come I'll see this as the moment I betrayed my northern heritage. [...]

Crime in Wandsworth – Part Two

The second of my Face The Public presentation. OK, it’s a bit long, at nearly ten minutes, but the video is ‘annotated’ at the front so you can jump straight to individual sections. This section contains a brief outline of the priority setting process, last year’s priorities, acquisitive crime, serious violent crime and community reassurance. [...]
