About
I'm a councillor in the London Borough of Wandsworth; this blog mainly covers that, sometimes general politics and policy and occasionally anything else that takes my fancy.

Nudge and… dog turds
There’s something about being a councillor and dog poo. You can’t just blame it on irresponsible and inconsiderate dog-owners and move, carefully, on. Instead, it provokes thought and even, dare I say, analysis. Being a councillor isn’t the only frame of reference for me – yesterday I couldn’t help but reflect I’d discovered the least-joyous

Shaftesbury Park 20mph zone
Transport for London have finally started working on the entry treatments to the Shaftesbury Park Estate that will make it a 20mph zone. Local residents will know that equipment and stock from the works they did to the entries to Amies Street have sat on Sabine Road for some time. And Wandsworth Council have been

Shaftesbury Park Estate: The True Story
For some time my to do list has included ‘Write a Wikipedia article about the Shaftesbury Park Estate’. I’ll freely confess that it was never at the top of the list, and it was always one of those things I wanted to do one day when I had time. That day that never really comes.

Shaftesbury Park Estate 20mph zone
I’ve posted about this a few times before, but investigated a little further when asked by a resident recently if it was still happening. They had not seen any of the works they expected taking place. I was also a little confused when Transport for London (TfL) started working on the other side of Latchmere

The end of the Elsley School building?
Elsley School’s move to the Nightingale site looks like being made permanent. The site has been empty for some time now, and on occasion been a cause for concern and problem for neighbouring residents. To be fair I’m not that surprised. I was chairman of governors at the school immediately before it ‘federated’ with Nightingale,

20mph zone for Shaftesbury Park Estate
Following consultation with residents the Shaftesbury Park Estate will be getting a 20mph zone, one of the borough’s first. Reducing speed limits has been a frequent request in all my time as a councillor. The problem was that it just couldn’t be enforced – the police have other priorities and traditional speed bumps have severe

A great start to the year: dog fouling
I didn’t make any New Year’s Resolutions about this blog but perhaps I should have made one to avoid posting about any councillor’s favourite topic: dog fouling. Up and down the country it’s one of those issues that has become a cliche in for local government. But it’s become a cliche because it is a

Shaftesbury SNT drop-in clinic
The Shaftesbury Safer Neighbourhood Team are holding a drop-in clinic tomorrow (Friday 27 November), between 12 noon and 4pm in the old Peabody Offices on Eversleigh Road. They will be there to discuss any policing, crime or anti-social behaviour issues you may have. If you can’t get along their contact details are available on the

Shaftesbury Park Estate to be a 20mph zone
Following on from the introduction of the local safety scheme on the Shaftesbury Park Estate the council is now looking at introducing a 20mph speed limit on the estate’s roads. 20mph zones are tricky, largely because they need to be enforced and are not (I would say quite rightly) a priority for the police at

Wandsworth’s approach on dogs copied
The council’s consultation on dog control orders ends tomorrow, so the news that two other councils, Lambeth and Southwark, are seeking to emulate the Wandsworth approach to dog-chipping is timely. The dog control order consultation was extended following some rather misleading coverage in the press – I know of at least one campaign that was
